PRESS RELEASE
19 MAY
WORLD IBD DAY
DEDICATED TO ULCERATIVE COLITIS AND CROHN’S DISEASE

Municipal Buildings in Nicosia, Strovolos and Limassol Illuminated in Purple
Runners of the “Pericles Demetriou” Athletics Club Run for Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease

19 May has been designated as World Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Day. This year, Cyprus is actively participating in the global awareness campaign by illuminating public buildings in purple, the colour symbolizing Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Through this initiative, we aim to make the invisible VISIBLE while advocating for a better quality of life for patients and their families.

Supporting our efforts are the runners of the Pericles Demetriou Athletics Club, the Municipality of Nicosia, the Municipality of Limassol, and the Municipality of Strovolos. Their municipal buildings will be illuminated in purple on 19 May, joining iconic landmarks around the world such as Niagara Falls, The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Palace of the Parliament in Romania, Toronto’s famous CN Tower, and many others.

Our message is shared worldwide: we demand what we deserve—a better quality of life and an end to social exclusion.

The illumination programme is as follows: In Nicosia, at 19:45, the Strovolos Municipal Hall will be illuminated, and runners from the “Pericles Demetriou” Athletics Club will carry the purple flame to Nicosia City Hall, where the building will be illuminated at approximately 20:10 following a short ceremony. In Limassol, the purple lights will be switched on at 19:45.

The runners symbolize the difficult journey that patients must endure in order to bring light to their dreams, while at the same time demanding from the state their right to quality healthcare and medical treatment, which are essential for a better life.

We invite everyone to join us at these events and support the struggle of people living with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.
